The MEDACORNET project’s first-year consortium meeting and awareness event was held in a hybrid format on 6–7 June 2024 in Tunis, Tunisia, hosted by project partner Université de Tunis El Manar.
The first phase of fieldwork for the project’s acorn stakeholder analysis and the study of acorns’ traditional gastronomic value was carried out in Eldeniz village (Sivaslı district, Uşak) and Gökçeler village (Tavas district, Denizli) during March–April 2024. Further details are available on our social media channels.
In ITU Ayazaga campus, 4 trees of Quercus Rubra, Quercus Frainetto and Quercus Cerris species were identified and acorn fruits were collected for nutritional analysis with crates placed under each tree between October and January without interfering with the natural harvest process. In addition, the coordinates of each tree and other information about the trees were recorded to be transmitted to the project partner (GEOAI), which focuses on machine learning related to harvest prediction in the coming years. ITU Environmental Engineering student Elif Gülin Pakel took part in these field studies.
MEDACORNET kick-off meeting was held in Guimarães, Portugal on July 3-4, 2023 with the participation of ITU.
