MEDACORNET is a project carried out by a research consortium of 11 scientific institutions from 8 Mediterranean countries – Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Croatia, Italy, Spain and Portugal – supported by TÜBİTAK under the PRIMA program. MEDACORNET aims to promote adherence to the Mediterranean diet with recognized health benefits by offering innovative acorn-based products and digital platforms covering the entire production chain. Focusing on raising public awareness and creating a new value chain for nutritious food innovations, the project aims to appeal to various groups including individuals with celiac disease, gluten-related disorders, vegans/vegetarians and health-conscious individuals by offering acorn-based foods. By providing essential nutrients as well as including gluten-free elements such as acorns, the innovative approach will help reduce the risks associated with issues such as diabetes and obesity.
In response to changing consumer habits with environmental and health awareness, this initiative prioritizes deepening food knowledge, highlighting the benefits of bioactive compounds and carefully assessing the environmental impact of the value chain. It helps research and optimize acorn conversion by-products in sectors such as nutraceuticals and biomedicine, contributing to sustainable development while preserving the unique Mediterranean landscape and living oak ecosystems.
In the current socio-economic context, MEDACORNET stands out by advocating for short ‘Forest to Fork’ value chains, ensuring a consistent supply of locally sourced food ingredients to regional markets and providing a fundamental solution to critical challenges in food sovereignty.
